I loved Daisy Jones and the Six by Taylor Jenkins Reid. The story follows the rise and fall of a fictional 1970s rock band, and it is an absolutely captivating read. The book’s unique format reminded me of Rolling Stone Magazine since, rather than being written in a traditional narrative style, the story is told through a series of interviews with the band members and other people in their lives. This format gives the story a sense of immediacy and intimacy that is hard to achieve in a traditional novel. The characters in this book are all so well-written and fully realized that they feel like real people. They have flaws and struggles and make mistakes, but they are also incredibly talented and passionate about their music. The relationships between the band members are complex and compelling, and the tension and drama that arise throughout the story kept me on the edge of my seat. So many times, I had to remind myself that the book is fiction. The audiobook version is particularly enjoyable, as each character is voiced by a different narrator, giving the interviews a truly immersive feel. The narrators bring their characters to life with their distinctive voices, and the music woven throughout the story enhances the experience. I highly recommend Daisy Jones and the Six to anyone who loves music, 1970s nostalgia, and complex character-driven stories. Those were the days! Want to spend part of your summer on Martha’s Vineyard and Nantucket without having to spend a fortune? Reading Summer of ’69 by Elin Hilderbrand is just the ticket – no lines, no delays, no cancellations, no reservations, and a lot cheaper. The story is about a family on Nantucket, and one of the daughters has taken a summer job on neighboring Martha’s Vineyard. Hilderbrand’s intimate knowledge and experience from her time on Nantucket made it easy for her to set such a vivid scene. She weaves personal details of the time that authenticate the period and demonstrate how much times have changed. Summer of ’69 is an interesting historical fiction novel but an equally terrific beach read. Hilderbrand covers all the hot points from the civil and women’s rights movements to the war in Vietnam, the moon launch, Woodstock, and Chappaquiddick. It’s a multi-generational story told by multiple family members – a great way to see how the times affected everybody and let the reader know each character. I loved how Hilderbrand used the names of classic songs from sixties bands like Buffalo Springfield and Jefferson Airplane. Great book, and if they ever make a movie, the soundtrack will be fantastic! Now I am curious and think I will put her other book, Summer of ’79, on my TBR list. I listened to the audiobook and Erin Bennett does a great job with the narration. 13 hours, 34 minutes

Like a wave that crashed onto the shore and pulled me out to sea, I was swept away by Raynor Winn’s The Salt Path in the first 20 pages and deeply immersed in their story. The book reads raw and rough, much like their 630-mile walk. Winn’s descriptions of the southwest coast path in England make me want to experience the natural, wild beauty for myself. But then I remember what it’s like to go camping for long periods and think better of it. Wild camping may sound exciting, but as Ray explains, it has many drawbacks. She does not romanticize their situation; instead, she captures the realism of it, which can make some people uncomfortable. They had a home, their health, and the security of being able to make a living – all gone in the blink of an eye. It’s a story about life and how not paying attention to the little details can make all the difference in the world. However, it’s also about demonstrating that no matter how hard you get knocked down that it’s best to get back up and keep on moving. It’s a unique story about homelessness and how a couple of people who had everything going against them managed to keep going despite the odds. Great adventure read.

Approaching it cautiously due to past disappointments, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it truly deserves the accolades it has received. Garmus skillfully balances the intense themes of the narrative with her infectious wit and humor, creating an engaging and enjoyable reading experience. Elizabeth’s trials resonated deeply with me as I found echoes of her struggles in our modern society. Garmus’s portrayal of her challenges felt authentic and relatable, drawing me further into the story. I was particularly drawn to the author’s vivid descriptions of the joys and tribulations of life with a newborn, which had me chuckling out loud. With anticipation and curiosity, I plunged into the pages, eager to immerse myself in the captivating world of Evelyn Hugo. There’s always a lot of fanfare and hype surrounding a new release from TJR, so I was keen to see if this popular historical fiction book would live up to its growing reputation.
As a fan of Reid’s other works, I had high expectations for The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. The book’s premise is undeniably intriguing and captivating as it revolves around the enigmatic and iconic Hollywood actress Evelyn Hugo and her scandalous life with seven husbands. I will miss spending time with the Ganguli family. Jhumpa Lahrai skillfully tells the story of Ashima and Ashoke Ganguli, telling their story as much as the story of Gogol their son. From Calcutta, India, to Cambridge, MA, the reader is transported on an emotional and geographical odyssey. Lahiri’s vivid descriptions of the Ganguli family’s life painted such a vibrant picture that I felt like I was one of their guests, engulfed in the aroma of Ashima’s cooking. The Namesake by Jhumpa Lahiri is a literary gem that left an indelible mark on my heart. This poignant tale delves into the intricate tapestry of identity, cultural heritage, and the enduring power of names. I enjoyed experiencing this remarkable journey through the audiobook version, narrated by Sarita Choudhury, which elevated the storytelling to new heights. Have you ever come across a book on your shelf that has always intrigued you but remained untouched for years? For me, that book was The Phantom Tollbooth. I remember gazing at its captivating illustrations as a child, too young to read the story myself. As I grew older and became a parent, the book remained untouched on the shelf. It wasn’t until recently that I finally decided to pick it up and dive into its pages. And oh, what a delightful journey it turned out to be. As I reflect on my experience with this beloved classic, I can’t help but feel a sense of remorse for not reading it to my children when I had the chance.
However, as I held the paperback version in my hands, another aspect struck me deeply. It was the 1996 Appreciation by Maurice Sendak, which I discovered after immersing myself in the story. Sendak’s words resonated with me as he reflected on the passage of time since the book’s original publication and the enduring relevance of its tale. He astutely highlighted how The Phantom Tollbooth served as a commentary on the excessive specialization, lack of communication, conformity, and other alarming ills of the late 1990s urban living. Little did he know that these themes would continue to echo in our present-day society “AS LOUD AS POSSIBLE.”

I really liked this book and thought that it was a touching story about a Catholic family and their ‘extraordinary” son, Sam. From the moment I started listening to the book, I was absorbed in the world of Sam, his parents, and his friends, Ernie and Mickey. Each character is well-developed and well-rounded and adds their own spark to the story. This book is the story of a boy who spends his life being judged by appearance. Unfortunately, our society continues to look too much at the shell and not remember it’s what’s inside that makes us who we really are. “Our skin, our hair, and our eyes are simply the shell that surrounds our soul, and our soul is who we are. What counts is on the inside.” I highly recommend this book – it’s a great story that the author also narrates wonderfully as well.

Furthermore, it fulfilled the requirement of featuring the main character’s name in the title, providing a fascinating glimpse into the life of the iconic queen herself. I love historical fiction, and this book effortlessly met that category as well, immersing me in the vividly reconstructed world of Ancient Egypt and Rome. Although it didn’t claim the title of the longest book on my TBR list, even at an impressive duration of 49 hours and 51 minutes, it found its place as the fourth longest. Given my longstanding fascination with Cleopatra’s story, the opportunity to be transported to her world, even for a fraction of time, was an absolute treat.
However, it wasn’t just the reading challenges that prompted me to delve into The Memoirs of Cleopatra. The recent buzz surrounding Cleopatra’s name in the news, notably the Netflix documentary series, African Queens, caught my attention. It offers a captivating and immersive experience spanning an impressive 49 hours and 51 minutes which I realize would scare off many – but it shouldn’t. Don’t let it. It’s so worth it. From the very beginning, I was transported back in time to the enchanting world of Ancient Egypt and Rome. George’s meticulous research and exceptional storytelling skills shine through as she skillfully weaves together the tale of Cleopatra from the perspective of the remarkable queen herself. It’s refreshing to see history unfold through Cleopatra’s eyes, offering a unique and original viewpoint that sets this book apart. One of the aspects that truly impressed me was how George delved into Cleopatra’s innermost thoughts and emotions, bringing her to life as a complex and multi-dimensional character. Who knew it would conjure up memories of Klara and The Sun?!
We – Mark, has gone down this rabbit hole with me –have made our way to Season, Episode 5, appropriately titled A.W.E.S.O.M-O. In the show, Cartman dresses up as a Japanese robot friend to trick Butters into trusting him so that he can learn Butter’s secrets to embarrass him later. When Butters receives his robot, he is thrilled to have a friend who will play with him, and he can share his secrets. I immediately thought about Klara and The Sun, published on March 2, 2021. The Awesome-O episode aired on April 14, 2004. There are many instances where South Park, like the Simpsons, seems to predict the future, but that’s for another blog article to discuss.

Twice recently, I have recommended it — mainly because of where we are today with AI technology used daily by everyday people. So with that I felt I needed to update and upgrade my original review.
Updated and upgraded review: June 2023 I originally reviewed Kazuo Ishiguro’s Klara and the Sun after finishing it in July of 2021, giving it a rating of 4 out of 5 stars. Since then, I have had many occasions where I have thought back or been reminded of this book. So, I feel compelled to delve deeper into the aspects of the book that captivated me and made it such a fantastic read –and one that, more recently, with the introduction of AI technology into our lives –keeps coming to mind. The moment I began reading, I was submersed into the story. Ishiguro’s writing is both eloquent and evocative, allowing me to immerse myself in the world of artificial intelligence effortlessly. The author’s skillful storytelling transports the reader into a future where AI companions like Klara exist, blurring the boundaries between human and machine. One of the most intriguing elements of the book is the perspective provided by Klara, the novel’s protagonist, and narrator. Klara’s narrative voice is at once innocent, observant, and empathetic. Through her eyes, we gain a unique insight into the complexities of human emotions, relationships, and the intricate dynamics between humans and the technology surrounding them.
